Sławomir T. Kalicki Within the last century economy, production and markets rapidly changed. Nowadays we are talking about globalization in meanings of transfer of production to low-wage countries, increasingly global supplier patterns, more just-in-time production and worldwide sales strategies by industry which will steadily increase the demand on transport chains.

Stimulated by this ongoing globalization of the markets and in due course the necessity of cargo turn over and transport infrastructure, ports became one of the most important gateways to the emerging markets especially in Central and Eastern Europe and in due course one of the winners of this development.

Hendrik Lorenz But to meet the demands of customers not only does it depend on functional ports and terminals, but much more on efficient hinterland links via all carriers as there are efficient road, rail and inland vessel infrastructure a must to participate in the challenges of today and in the future, or in other words .Supply Chain Management., logistic solutions are today and in the future the challenges. Further on we have to face that these transport chains depending on efficient distribution and logistics sites, close to the markets and customers. In due course transport chains as well as information chains and logistics know-how are becoming increasingly densely interlinked.

Well aware of the knowledge of these developments, will we be able to participate in emerging markets and to be accompanied by a growing prosperity, in the demands of infrastructure development, in the ongoing globalization, or will it become a nightmare?

The Maritime Economy Panel of the 8th International Economic Forum Gdynia 2008 will present and discuss the .Global Challenges in Supply Chain Management. and analyse the importance and necessity of logistic- and distribution sites in connection to ports and hinterland, as well as infrastructure development in Poland and the region.

Experts of the Baltic Sea Institute, major Shipping Line and logistics company, developer of Logistics Sites as well as representative of a financial institute will present their point of view and will discuss the challenges of the future in logistics. The panel will be moderated by Mr. Hendrik Lorenz, Director Business Development and Marketing, Inter Marine Sp. z o.o., previously Chairman of Port of Hamburg Marketing.

We herewith invite you to participate in this platform of networking and business development as well as in the panel debate to open the minds and understanding for one of our most important sectors and chances of economy worldwide.
